Ask five marketers what authority means and you may get five answers: a score in an SEO tool, a Google ranking factor, a strong reputation, a library of expert content, or simply being well known. The terms overlap, and the confusion matters. Teams end up chasing a number in a dashboard while the thing buyers and AI tools actually respond to goes unmeasured.
This guide separates the terms, explains which ones matter for AI search, and shows how to build and measure them. For the practical steps to earn coverage and mentions, see How to Build Authority So Search and AI Engines Cite Your Brand.
In short
- Brand search authority is how strongly search engines and AI tools associate your brand with your category, and how often people look for you by name.
- Domain authority is a third-party SEO score, not something Google or AI tools use.
- Topical authority comes from covering a subject in depth. Digital authority is all the evidence about you across the web, most of it on other people’s sites.
- You can measure brand search authority with branded demand, share of search, category visibility and AI share of voice.
What is brand search authority?
Brand search authority is the strength of the connection between your brand and your category in search engines and AI tools. It shows up in two ways: people search for your company by name, and search engines and AI tools include your company when people search for the category without naming anyone.
A company with high brand search authority is both sought and suggested. Buyers type its name into Google, and when someone asks an AI tool “Which ERP implementation partners work with manufacturers in Saudi Arabia?”, it appears in the answer.
It is not a single score. It is the visible result of three things working together: recognition in the market, depth of expertise on your topics, and consistent evidence about you across the web.
How do brand, domain, topical and digital authority differ?
They describe different layers of the same reputation. Only some of them are things search engines and AI tools actually respond to.
| Term | What it describes | Who defines it | Role in AI search |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain authority | A predicted strength score based mostly on backlinks | SEO tool vendors (for example Moz’s DA or Ahrefs’ DR) | None directly. It is a useful comparison metric, not a signal Google or AI tools use |
| Brand authority | How recognised and trusted a company is in its market | Buyers, the market | Indirect but strong: recognised brands are mentioned and searched for more |
| Topical authority | How completely and deeply a website covers a subject | Search engines and AI tools, through what they retrieve and cite | Direct: pages from sites that cover a topic well are more likely to be retrieved |
| Digital authority | All the evidence about a company across the web: website, media, reviews, directories, social | The sum of many sources | Direct: AI tools build answers from this evidence |
| Brand search authority | The search-visible result: being searched for by name and suggested for the category | Measured through search and AI data | The outcome you track |
The practical takeaway: stop treating a domain score as the goal. Build topical and digital authority, and measure brand search authority as the result.
What is digital authority for AI search?
Digital authority for AI search is the total body of evidence AI tools can find about a company: what its own website says, and what independent sources say about it. AI tools assemble answers from many sources at once, so a company’s authority is judged on the whole picture, not on its website alone.
Most of that picture sits on other people’s websites. A BrandMentions study of about 410,000 public brand mentions across 240 brands, published in July 2026, found that third-party sources made up roughly 70–80% of the online footprint of brands that appeared repeatedly in AI answers. The brands’ own domains accounted for only about 15–20%, and more than half of third-party mentions were plain text without a link.
Three things follow for B2B technology companies:
- Unlinked mentions count. A partner page, a conference agenda or an industry article that names you builds digital authority even without a backlink.
- Consistency matters more than volume. Hundreds of mentions describing you in different ways create a blurry picture. A smaller number that agree on what you do are more useful.
- Regional sources matter. For companies in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, coverage in regional English and Arabic media, local association directories and vendor partner pages for the region carries weight for regional questions.
How do you build topical authority for AI search visibility?
Build topical authority by covering a small number of subjects completely: every important question a buyer has, answered on a clearly organised set of pages that link to each other. Breadth within a topic appears to matter more than a domain score.
A September 2026 study by Wellows analysed 9,471 questions across 151 topics and five AI engines. It found that how much of a topic a website covered was more closely associated with being cited than its stored authority score on four of the five engines, including Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Perplexity. The associations were moderate and do not prove cause and effect, but they point the same way as practical experience: depth beats a generic presence.
A practical approach:
- Choose two to four core topics tied to what you sell, for example “ERP implementation for manufacturers” rather than “digital transformation”.
- Map the questions buyers ask about each topic: the problem, approaches, comparisons, costs, implementation, risks and regional requirements.
- Build a hub and cluster structure. One main page per topic, supported by focused pages that each answer a specific question, all linked together.
- Write from real experience. Use your team’s delivery knowledge, examples and data, published under named experts.
- Extend the topic beyond your site. Contribute to industry articles, events and partner content on the same subjects, so independent sources connect you to the topic too.
- Keep it current. Review the cluster every quarter and update pages when regulations, technology or pricing change.
Avoid spreading content across dozens of loosely related subjects. Ten thorough pages on one topic usually do more than fifty thin pages on ten.
How do you measure brand search authority?
Use a small scorecard that covers both sides of brand search authority, being sought and being suggested, and review it monthly or quarterly.
| Metric | What it shows | Where to find it | How often |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branded search demand | How many people search for your company by name | Google Search Console (queries containing your brand) | Monthly |
| Share of search | Your branded searches as a share of all branded searches in your category | Google Trends or keyword tools, comparing you with named competitors | Quarterly |
| Category visibility | How often you rank for non-branded category and problem searches | Search Console, rank tracking | Monthly |
| AI share of voice | How often AI tools mention you for a fixed set of category questions, compared with competitors | AI visibility tracking across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google | Monthly |
| Description accuracy | Whether AI tools describe your services, markets and audience correctly | Manual review of AI answers | Quarterly |
| Third-party footprint | The number and relevance of independent mentions | Media monitoring, brand mention tools | Quarterly |
Look at the trend, not a single reading. Rising branded demand together with a growing AI share of voice is the clearest sign that authority is building. For how to run the AI part of this tracking, see What Is AI Visibility?
Frequently asked questions
Is domain authority a Google ranking factor?
No. Domain authority and similar scores are created by SEO tool vendors to estimate a site’s link strength. They are useful for comparison, but Google and AI tools do not use them.
What is AI visibility for brands?
It is how often and how accurately AI tools mention, cite and recommend a brand when people ask about its category. It is one of the clearest signals of brand search authority today.
Can a smaller company have more topical authority than a larger one?
Yes. Topical authority depends on how well you cover a specific subject, not on company size. A focused specialist can outperform a larger competitor that covers the topic only briefly.
How long does it take to build topical authority?
A well-planned topic cluster can begin earning visibility within a few months of publishing. Recognition across search engines, AI tools and third-party sources usually takes six to twelve months of consistent work.
Does branded search volume affect AI visibility?
The two tend to rise together because both reflect recognition. Branded demand is best treated as a sign that authority is growing, not as a lever on its own.
