Looking to accelerate your Marketing growth?

A CISO in Riyadh needs a managed security partner. An IT director in Dubai is comparing ERP integrators. In 2026, many of them start by asking ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Google’s AI Overviews, not by scrolling through ten blue links.

The numbers behind that shift are hard to ignore. Forrester’s January 2026 research found that 94% of business buyers now use AI in their buying process, up from 89% a year earlier. In the UAE, 73.3% of the working-age population used a generative AI tool in June 2026, the highest rate in the world.

If your company doesn’t appear in those answers, you aren’t on the shortlist. That is the problem GEO solves.

In short

  • GEO (generative engine optimization) is the practice of making your company visible, accurately described and cited in AI-generated answers.
  • It builds on SEO rather than replacing it: most pages AI tools cite also rank well on Google.
  • AI tools favor clear, structured, up-to-date content and third-party mentions such as media coverage, LinkedIn and reviews.
  • For B2B tech companies in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, GEO matters now because buyers build shortlists with AI before they ever contact sales.

What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?

GEO, or generative engine optimization, is the work of making sure AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews find your company, understand what you do, and mention or cite you when buyers ask relevant questions. Where SEO aims for a ranking, GEO aims for a mention inside the answer.

You may also see the terms AEO (answer engine optimization) or AI search optimization. They describe the same goal from slightly different angles.

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO helps your pages rank in search results so people click through to your site. GEO helps your company appear inside the answer itself, often without a click.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO is built on SEO. AirOps found in March 2026 that 55.8% of pages ChatGPT cited ranked in Google’s top 20, and pages ranking first were cited 3.5 times more often than pages outside the top 20. AI tools run their own web searches before they answer. If your pages don’t show up in those searches, they can’t be quoted.

Why does GEO matter if my buyers still use Google?

Google itself now answers many questions with AI. An Ahrefs study published in February 2026 found that an AI Overview on the results page cuts the click-through rate of the top result by 58%. Ranking first still matters, but the buyer increasingly reads the AI summary before deciding whether to click anything. We explore this shift in more depth in AI Visibility: What Happens When Buyers Get the Answer Before Visiting Your Website.

Search and AI visibility: why your company may be missing from AI answers

Why don’t we show up when a buyer asks ChatGPT for a provider?

Usually it’s one of four reasons: your website doesn’t state clearly what you do, for whom and where; your content doesn’t answer the questions buyers actually ask; few independent sources mention you; or the information about you is inconsistent across your website, LinkedIn and directories. AI tools hesitate to recommend a company they can’t describe with confidence.

For many B2B tech firms in the Gulf, the cause is simpler still. They grew through partners, distributors and referrals, so their online presence was never built to be found.

How do AI tools decide which companies to mention?

When a buyer asks a question, the AI tool breaks it into several smaller searches, reads the pages it finds, and writes an answer from the sources it trusts most. AirOps found that 89.6% of prompts triggered two or more of these “fan-out” searches, and 95% of fan-out queries had zero monthly search volume. AI tools are searching for long, specific questions that no keyword tool tracks.

The sources they trust are mostly outside your website. Muck Rack’s May 2026 analysis of more than 25 million links found that 84% of citations in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini answers came from earned media: news coverage, industry publications and other third-party content. Meltwater’s study of 9.5 million AI citations across 16 B2B categories, published in May 2026, ranked LinkedIn as the second most-cited source, behind only YouTube.

How can I check whether my company appears in AI answers today?

Start with a simple manual test:

  1. Write 10–15 questions your buyers would ask, such as “best cloud security providers in Saudi Arabia for government entities” or “who implements Microsoft Dynamics in Abu Dhabi”.
  2. Ask each one in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, and check Google’s AI Overview.
  3. Note whether you are mentioned, how you are described, which competitors appear, and which sources are cited.
  4. Repeat monthly. AI answers change, so one snapshot isn’t enough.

For ongoing tracking, dedicated AI visibility tools can run hundreds of prompts automatically and report your share of voice against competitors.

SEO and GEO for tech companies in the UAE and Saudi Arabia

Does GEO matter for B2B tech, SaaS and cybersecurity companies?

Yes, arguably more than for consumer brands. B2B tech purchases are complex, high-value and researched in depth, which is exactly the kind of research people now hand to AI. Forrester found that business buyers named generative AI and conversational search as an important information source twice as often as any other source, and are four times as likely as consumers to use Microsoft Copilot. An AI answer often names three to five vendors. If you aren’t one of them, you may never hear about the deal.

How are buyers in the UAE and Saudi Arabia using AI?

Both markets are moving fast. The UAE leads the world in AI use at 73.3% of the working-age population, against a global average of 18.8%, according to Microsoft’s September 2026 AI diffusion update. In the same report, Saudi Arabia posted the biggest jump in the rankings, from 30th to 25th.

In Saudi Arabia, the Communications, Space and Technology Commission’s latest Saudi Internet Report found that 45.2% of internet users now use AI tools, more than double the previous year, with ChatGPT the most-downloaded AI app. For Saudi buyers, that research increasingly happens in both Arabic and English, so a bilingual presence matters.

We grow through partners and referrals. Do we still need search and AI visibility?

Yes. Referrals still start conversations, but buyers now check you before they reply. A referred prospect will often ask an AI tool, “What do you know about this company?” If the answer is vague, outdated or empty, the referral loses weight. If it is clear and confirms your expertise, your partner’s recommendation is backed up before the first meeting.

How to get started with GEO

What are the first steps?

  1. Run an AI visibility baseline. Use the manual test above to see where you appear today, and where competitors appear instead.
  2. Fix your core facts. Make sure your website, LinkedIn page and directory listings say the same thing about what you do, which industries you serve, and where you operate (UAE, Saudi Arabia, or both).
  3. Rewrite key pages around buyer questions. Each service and industry page should answer, in its first lines, who it is for, what problem it solves and why you are qualified.
  4. Get the SEO foundations right. Make sure your site is fast, crawlable and indexed, with clear headings and structured data (schema). AI tools can’t cite pages they can’t reach.
  5. Publish content that answers real questions. Guides, comparisons and FAQs on the topics your buyers research, with your own data and expert views where you have them.
  6. Build third-party presence. Industry media coverage, partner and vendor listings, analyst mentions, reviews and an active LinkedIn presence for the company and its leaders. See How to Build Authority for Search and AI Visibility.

What can we do in-house, and when do we need an agency?

A motivated marketing lead can run the baseline, align your core facts and keep LinkedIn active. Most B2B tech companies need outside support when the work requires technical SEO, structured content at scale, media relations and someone who understands how technical buyers think. In our experience, the real risk is generic content. AI tools skip vague marketing copy in favor of specific, credible answers.

How long does it take, and how do we measure it?

Because AI tools search the web live, a clearer, updated page can start appearing in answers within weeks. Becoming a source AI tools consistently trust takes months of steady content and third-party mentions.

Measure more than traffic. Leadfeeder’s October 2026 study found that AI referrals are still only 1.8% of combined AI and organic search visits to B2B sites, but grew 3.1 times between January 2025 and July 2026, against 1.64 times for organic search. Many buyers read about you in an AI answer, then search your brand name or visit directly. Track:

  • How often you are mentioned and cited for your priority questions
  • How accurately AI tools describe your company
  • Growth in branded search and direct traffic
  • Leads that say they found you through ChatGPT or another AI tool (add it as an option on your contact form)

Frequently asked questions about GEO

No. AirOps found that about 74% of ChatGPT citations went to sites with a domain authority under 80, not just to the biggest brands. Specialized companies with clear, focused content can be cited for niche questions where large players are vague.

A mention is when the AI names your company in its answer. A citation is when it links to your page as a source. Both matter: mentions build awareness, and citations send buyers to your site and show you are a trusted source.

Yes. AI tools answer in the language of the question, so Saudi and Emirati buyers asking in Arabic will see sources available in Arabic. Proper Arabic versions of your key pages, rather than machine translations, give you a better chance of appearing in those answers.

Organic mentions and citations in AI answers can’t be bought. Some platforms are introducing ads, but these are labeled separately. Lasting visibility comes from clear content, technical health and credible third-party coverage.

No. AI answers change as new content is published and models are updated. Treat GEO like SEO: a foundation you build once, then maintain and expand.
